Пермь - административный центр Пермской области. Город занимает особо выгодное географическое положение, так как расположен на пересечении главной железнодорожной магистрали Европа - Азия с крупнейшим водным путем меридионального направления к пяти морям рекой Камой, вдоль которой город протянулся на 70 км. Воздушными линиями город связан с десятками городов России и стран мира.
На территории города находятся 3 крупных ботанических памятника природы (Закамский сосновый бор, "Липовая Гора", городской лесопарк "Черняевский лес"), общей площадью 2400 га, а также ряд других природных объектов.
Современная Пермь - крупный промышленный центр с развитым машиностроением, химической, нефтехимической, нефтеперерабатывающей и деревообрабатывающей промышленностью. В городе действует крупный полиграфический комбинат - фабрика "Гознак", известностью пользуется фабрика клавишных инструментов, имеется несколько десятков предприятий легкой и пищевой промышленности. В пределах Перми расположена Камская ГЭС, действующая с 1956 года.
Пермь - крупный научный центр, где сосредоточен ряд институтов Уральского отделения Российской Академии наук, десятки научно-исследовательских и проектных институтов, 7 вузов, ведущих разнообразные научные исследования фундаментальной и прикладной тематики.
Культурный потенциал города составляют 4 государственных, 2 муниципальных, несколько самодеятельных театров, филармония, музеи и другие учреждения. В художественной галерее собраны шедевры русской иконописи строгановской школы, отечественной и зарубежной классики, уникальное собрание деревянной скульптуры. Государственный академический театр оперы и балета, основанный в 1870 г., осуществил постановку всех опер П.И.Чайковского, за что пользуется заслуженным уважением в России.

Perm is the administrative center of Perm region. The city has convenient geographical location; it is situated on both banks of the Kama river, the fourth longest river in Europe, and is a port of five seas. The motor highway connecting Europe and Asia and the transsiberian arterial road pass through Perm. The Perm airport has direct lines to many cities of Russia and different countries.
The city is surrounded by beautiful pine forests. In Perm, there are three Parks of Culture and Rest (Zakamskiy coniferous forest and municipal forest parks “Chernjaevskiy les” and “Lipovaja gora”) of total area of 24 sq. km.
Present day Perm is one of the biggest industrial centers in Privolzhiye area with developed machine-building, chemical, petrochemical, oil-processing and woodworking industry. Perm’s industries produce goods of a high standard such as aircraft engines, electrical appliances, super-high-voltage cables. The city is also known for the “Kama” musical production association and the printing factory “Goznak”.
Perm is a great scientific center, where a number of Institutes of the Ural Department of the Russian Academy of Science, tens of research and design institutes are concentrated. Perm has seven higher schools making a valuable contribution to faster scientific and technological progress.
Perm is also known for its cultural establishments. There are 4 state theaters (an opera-house, a drama theater, a puppet-show and a juvenile theater), two municipal theaters, a philharmonic society, an art gallery and a museum in Perm. The Perm State Art Gallery is remarkable for its collection of the Perm wooden sculpture. Here are exhibited pictures by many painters of the Italian, Flemish, Dutch and French schools of the 1st to the 18th centuries. The P.I.Tchaikovsky Perm State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater is reputed to be one of the best theaters in Russia. Its repertoire is very extensive. Operas and ballets performed by the theater have always been a great success.
